Mayor of Gaziantep, President of UCLG-MEWA
Fatma Şahin was born in Gaziantep in 1966. In 1987, she received a BS degree in chemical engineering from Istanbul Technical University. From 1988 to 2001, she worked as a plant engineer and plant manager at one of the leading companies of Turkey.
At the general elections held in November 2002, she was elected to the Parliament. At the general elections held on 22 July 2007, she was re-elected to the Parliament. During her tenure as parliamentarian, she was the member of Turkish-EU Joint Parliamentary Commission and the chairman of Morals and Decency Murders Commission and Research Commission of Violence against Children.
Fatma Şahin is the first woman Deputy of the Parliament for Gaziantep and Southeastern Anatolia region. She also assumed the different duties at the Justice and Development Party (AK Party) such as vice-chairman of the Party and the member of Central Executive Committee. She acted as Women Branches Chairwoman of AK Party between 2007 and 2011. After the 2011 general election she was appointed as Minister of Family and Social Policies as the only woman Minister at the Cabinet.
She was elected as Mayor of Gaziantep Metropolitan Municipality at the local elections at March, 30 2014. She is married with two children.
