Ralph Youri Chevry
Mayor of Port-au-Prince, Haiti
Ralph Yuri Chevry, third in a family of six, was born the 14th October 1967 in Port-au-Prince, capital of Haiti. He spent his childhood and lived in the Canapé-Vert neighborhood. This city where he grew up and which he passionately loves will nevertheless rob him, on 12 January 2010, two loved ones in the devastating earthquake in which he lost his first wife and his only daughter.
Far from discouraging him, this drama would rather invest on him a social mission: to work for the welfare of his community. He understood that this was not so much the earthquake that killed as many victims, but rather the condition of buildings and urban infrastructure of the city. He then began to pay more attention to urban and municipal issues to make a personal commitment of it and it is precisely the fulfillment of this mission that led him to municipal politics.
Yet from the upper middle class, Yuri realized soon enough the depth of social inequality that are tearing the country. When he returned to Haiti after his studies in the United States of America, he focused his interested on young people from disadvantaged backgrounds and decided to use his professional skills to create opportunities in the Haitian music industry. He was owner and manager of the famous and popular Haitian band, Barikad Crew, which perfectly illustrates his positive influence on young people from disadvantaged backgrounds. He also led Haiti Shipping, a company of import-export between 1994 and 1998, before embarking definitively in the Haitian music industry to which he gave a remarkable boom. He also managed the musical group Djakout Mizik from 1998 to 2002 and created "Konpa Factory", a record company and label that produced many Haitian artists and groups. From 2002 to 2008 he was co-owner of "Audiotek", a recording studio and also of "Mizikanou", a record store.
Simple and reserved, very courteous man, with his slow but reassuring gait, Yuri is acknowledged as one of the most influential players in the cultural sector and Haitian music. Known for his generosity, his leadership, his remarkable popularity among youth, his passion for Haitian cultureall this soon turned to him into a social duty to which he devoted himself tirelessly every day up to now.
Ralph Yuri Chevry holds an associate degree in networking from the Boston Computer Learning, and an associate degree in Sound Management and Music from The Art Institute of Miami. Since June 2016, following the elections that were not held for almost eight years, he is the newly elected mayor of Port-au-Prince, the capital of the First Black Republic in the World.
